Moving a car can be challenging, especially if you have to transport your furniture and other belongings separately. The options you have are either to drive the car yourself or to find a car moving company to move your vehicle for you. Whether you drive the car yourself or have it transported, it probably would take almost the same amount of time to travel depending on the weather, road conditions and maybe your personal temperament.
Car Transport Companies
The first step will be to call several moving companies and find out if they move cars too and if they do not if they can refer you to a car transporter. Let them know when you want to make the move and the location where the car is to be picked up and where it is going.
Once you have a list of vehicle transporters, call the companies and try to narrow the list of movers you have by doing some due diligence. You could do a quick Google search to find out if there are any negative reports about the company online. Other things you should consider while deciding on a company should include cost of shipping and insurance.
Car Transport Quote
Begin searching for companies at least 2 weeks in advance or more. Get a car transport quote as soon as you can and work this into your budget. Do not wait until the last minute to set up a date. It is important that your car gets to the new destination at the right time so you do not have to spend money leasing a car before yours arrives or causing you some inconvenience.
Find out what is covered in cases of damage to the car, how much the car company will cover and how much the insurance policy will cost you and all the other options you have. In terms of cost, most companies will prefer an upfront payment and sometimes are particular about the means of payments such as credit card or cashier’s check.
Car Transport
For cross country transport, most companies will probably use a car transporter. That is one of those vehicles you normally see on the highway carrying cars, some of them looking as if they are going to fall off any moment. Do not worry they are very secure. From my experience, sometimes those transporters for one reason or the other, such as size cannot drive into your drive way or apartment parking lot and the driver would have to meet you somewhere. It could be a parking lot or prearranged destination.
Another option is for the driver to show up at your residence by cab or Taxi and drive the vehicle himself to where the transporter is located. However, before you handover your car make sure you go round your vehicle with the transporting company for them to check off any damages currently on the car and then sign off with them. Endeavor to remove all your valuables from the car, as they might not be covered by insurance incase of theft or damage.
Once your vehicle arrives at the new destination and is driven off the transporter, the first thing you do is grab the driver and walk around the vehicle to make sure that everything is as it were when you gave them the vehicle, no new scrape marks or damage.
